Capturing the Grace and Beauty of Horses
Being an equine photographer is a unique and rewarding profession that combines two passions: photography and a deep love for horses. It is one of my favourite genres of photography. There is nothing I love more than to capture the grace, power, and beauty of these magnificent animals whilst telling their stories through the lens of my camera. I know that your horse is your whole world, and I’d love the opportunity to create you something that you can treasure forever.

My sessions
My sessions are very relaxed and my number one aim is to capture the beauty and personality of your horse. I’d also love to capture the bond between the 2 of you, if you feel comfortable to do so. As an animal lover, I very much recognise the importance of our animals in our lives, and that they are very much part of the family. I love to capture the bond between loved ones, including those of the none-human kind. Just like us, every animal has their own character and personality traits and where possible I will showcase that in their shoot. Depending on your tastes, we can schedule a casual session, or a more formal styled session – there are many options and I am open to your ideas if you have something specific in mind. My sessions will usually take place in the areas around your yard however I am quite happy to do an on-location shoot if you fancy a little trip out with your horse. I can also do some studio style shoots if that’s what you are looking for but only if you feel that your horse would be comfortable with the extra equipment such as studio lighting and backdrops and not likely to be spooked by it.
As part of your photo shoot you also have the option of liberty images. To capture this kind of imagery, all that’s required is a suitable field or arena where your horse can move freely. Ideally, the space should not be overly large and should be free of other horses. Alternatively, you can choose to lunge using a lead rope and rope halter, with the these being removed during the retouching process. I do have both of these in my kit if needed.
I include at least one fine art edit within your final gallery. This will usually be a black background image. However, depending on the image that I think will work beautifully for a fine art image I may also use white or one of my hand painted backgrounds.

Equine Photography Session Guide
It's all in the prep!
Capturing stunning equine images doesn’t start the moment the camera settings are dialled in – it’s a journey that begins long before your fabulous equine photographer arrives! Follow my tips below to get the best out of your session…
Pre-Shoot Pep Talk for Your Horse
Your equine buddy needs to shake off some excess energy before striking a pose. You know your horse best, so use your judgment, but don’t push them too hard. The goal is to take the edge off, not leave them sweaty and exhausted. A brief lunging session of a few minutes can do wonders.
Primping and Grooming
Once your horse has run off a little bit of that energy, it’s time to get them catwalk ready. Approach your photo shoot as you would a show. Ensure your horse is looking pristine and well groomed. Braid if you wish to. Though it’s not necessary it’s always looks beautiful. Also have your tack cleaned to get the best look and resulting images. I recommend a bridle with a simple bit for pictures. If you bathe your horse, do so early enough that you are certain they will be completely dry for their session.
Shine On
Shine products are your secret weapon for that dazzling look. Your equine model should sparkle and shine, so apply and watch them glow!
Be ready for the red carpet arrival
Horses, like celebrities, appreciate punctuality. Ensure your horse is primed and ready at least 10 minutes before the session begins. However, If they’ve been tied up for a while, give them a break in their stall before I arrive. Do your best to ensure your prep process is as calm and stress free for your horse as possible to ensure they are relaxed and not anxious for their session.
A Little Hoof Magic
Remember, those hooves will make an appearance in the photos, so a bit of hoof polish goes a long way. Everyone loves shiny shoes! Don’t forget your own hooves too! If you are going to be in the photos with your horse and are planning on wearing boots, make sure they are clean and polished.
Squad Goals
If you’ve got a squad of horses to photograph, make sure they’re all prepped and easily accessible before showtime.
Bring a Friend
It’s like a party with your equine BFF! A friend or family member can lend a hand to perk up those ears and keep your horse engaged. Plus, they can handle the logistics, like buckets and tack, leaving you free to focus on the photoshoot.
Let’s get serious for a moment
During the session, it is really important to stay aware of your horses mood. They can have good and bad days just like us. It is critical that you communicate to me if you feel your horse’s mood changes, if you’re aware of them feeling nervous or if you feel that they aren’t going to like something. Please remember that I will not be familiar with your horse and as much as I’d like to be, I am not a horse psychic. Speak up and please don’t worry about doing so! We want to keep the session as sun and relaxed as possible. Minor challenges can be worked through but if the horse is becoming too stressed, we can easily reschedule for another day. Safety is the number one priority at all times. Though it may be inconvenient for both you and I (particularly after you’ve gone through all that prep work!), this is far better than the alternative.
The Fun Zone
Last but not least, relax and enjoy the session! Horses have their quirks, and there will be moments when they don’t quite get the memo. Don’t fret; we’ve got time to work through it. Patience is the name of the game, and if we stay calm, the session will unfold beautifully. Horses will be horses, and embracing their unique personalities is all part of the adventure. you’ve got to remember that we are asking them to do something they don’t understand and if you get stressed about it, so will they. We have to remember that we are putting them in what is an unusual situation for them and we must be patient.
So, saddle up for a fantastic equine photoshoot and let’s capture some unforgettable moments together!
